In the last two weeks I have discovered

In the last two weeks I have discovered that the book writing and publishing process is not as easy as one might think.  I have heard about people self-publishing and thought it would be easier than traditional publishing not to mention less expensive.  I have just barely started looking into the self publishing and discovered it is not as economical as I thought it was going to be.  Sure it is still a money saver compared to traditional publishing, editing and artwork design, but still not in my budget.  I have read many, many articles, blogs and websites debating the pros and cons of each but I still can’t come to a decision.

If I go with self-publishing I have to market the book myself, but then I ask will a publishing company really help with the marketing or is that something extra I will need to pay someone to do?  Artwork for the cover, even if it just the title, costs money but without it my chances are slim as my stick figure drawings are not going to grasp anyone’s attention. Then the editing, I really don’t want to skimp on that.  There is nothing worse than reading a book and having a pencil in your hand so you can correct the typos as you go.  I have run into this many times even with big name authors. Sorry, but it’s true. Then there’s the marketing,  Yes, it’s a littler easier in the present days of social media.  When I was growing up we had a tv and a phone attached to the wall, one has that round dial thing that you stick your finger in instead of the push buttons, to make connections with people.  Yes, I am that old.  Anyway, that’s a different story for another time.  You had to pay someone to help you get the word out about what it is you’re selling. Now you can plaster things all over the internet for anyone to see which seems simple, but it’s not if you want to reach the right market in a certain period of time.  **sigh**  Maybe I just need to concentrate of finishing the book and then worry about the other stuff later.

Do you, dear reader, have any suggestions for a new writer?

I had originally thought that I would write my book as this secret healing process and when I was done I would let the world know.  Well, my plans have changed.  I have found that talking to a few close friends has given me more support than if I had tried to write this book on my own.  I should have known better to never go it alone.  Their advice/opinions have been invaluable and I don’t know what I would do without such a great support group of friends and family.  I have realized that asking for help goes beyond talking to a therapist to work out my life issues.  Friends and family are there to help no matter what it is you need.  Someone is available to give advice or lend a hand.

I have turned to my friends for help on my book.  Their opinions mean the world to me and I will take what they say to further my self and my writing.  Thank you to those that have given up time in their lives to lend a hand, you know who you are.  🙂

A writers welcome. . .

Welcome!  As a beginning writer I have been seeking advice from many, many resources.  I cannot believe the over whelming support there is for writers out there.  Things sure have come a long way since I was young.   The resources and support have been a great encouragement as I try my hand at my first book.

I have to give credit to several of my close friends as well for encouraging me to write this book.  Although my life wasn’t as horrifying as many non-fiction memoirs I have read,  it certainly came as a shock to to the friends and acquaintances I have met.  Their encouragement and support has been great help in my motivation to move forward with writing this book.
